SEOUL Kim Myong Jae's estranged girlfriend was found dead in her room in Seoul on April 22 last
year, six days after she poisoned herself. Two weeks later, Kim, a 30-year-old accountant, found that he had been transformed into the No.
1 hate figure of South Korea's Internet community, a victim of a growing problem in a country
that boasts the world's highest rate of broadband use. First, death threats and vicious text messages flooded his cellphone. Meanwhile, spreading fast
through blogs and Web portals were rumors that Kim had jilted his girlfriend after forcing her
to abort his baby, that he had assaulted her and her mother, and that his abuse had finally
driven her to suicide. "By the time I found out the source of this outrage, it was too late. My name, address,
photographs, telephone numbers were all over the Internet," Kim said. "Tens of thousands of
people were busy sharing my identity and discussing how to punish me. My name was the
most-searched phrase at portals." News reports and portals confirmed that his name was at the
top of such lists. The allegations against Kim were first posted on his former girlfriend's home page after her
death and quickly spread in various versions. Kim vehemently denies the allegations, and the
police later said they could not substantiate them. But Web users took the matter into their own hands. They bombarded Kim's employer, the food and
beverage company Doosan, with so many calls demanding that it fire Kim or face a boycott that
Kim quit. Anonymous hate mail swamped the Web site of Kookmin University, where Kim attended
evening classes, forcing him to drop out. "I couldn't believe what was happening to me was real," he said. "My family had to move to a new
house. I was afraid to dine out or use public transportation. I had to live like a fugitive.

To Kim Myong Jae, it was familiar. "Two months after I became the target, I visited a plaza near
my old company. I dressed differently. Still a person reported my appearance on the Web, how I
looked and how that person felt sick to see me," Kim said. "It's a handicap I may have to carry
for a long time."
This is what was pretty much done in my case, except an explicit rumor was started, it never once mattered that it was not true, it had my life turned upside down just like the guy in the story, and moving has not helped because these people find you and the garbage starts all over again.
The victim met the perpetrator at church, and continually rejected his romantic attempts. The perpetrator, a fifty-year-old security guard, retaliated to her rejection by posting her personal details to the Internet. These included her physical description, address and telephone number, and even including details about how one could bypass her home security system. He also posted false rape and “gang-bang” fantasies to on-line forums. On approximately half a dozen occasions, men arrived at the victim's home in the hope of “cashing in” on these supposed fantasies. As the victim posted messages to her door stating these requests were false, the perpetrator posted messages on-line stating that these were simply tests to determine who was in fact ‘worthy’ of her fantasies.
The victim's mother states that she had men coming to her door at all hours of the night, and that “she got dozens of calls by men who would leave filthy, disgusting messages”. The victim was eventually forced from her home, suffered from weight loss, lost her job, and developed a fear of going outside of her home (from the L.A. Times, Friday the 22nd of January, 1999 and Saturday the 23rd of January, 1999).
In this second example the way people just assume that lies are true and just continue to persist even when you have stated this is not the case. For six years or so it meant having ruinous lies and slander spread about me, it meant having males I did not know, ones that were unfamiliar and familiar to me behave and act in fully unacceptable ways, and when I went to seek help and assistance from the organizations that were to be in place to help me, it meant more trauma, cover ups and lies.
It seems that it's cheaper for these companies to hush up the targets, hire people to follow them, see if they can dig up any dirt, and failing that, try to make them look none credible or crazyk and failing that you get what I now have which is being Gang Stalked to keep me quite, so I won't have any means or ability to sue either of the two companies responsible for allowing and then facilitating the bulk of my harassment. I guess compared to the cost of Lawyers and a law suit this has saved them money.
This is what it's like to try to stand up for yourself and to try to do what's right. The worst thing I remember at these companies are the woman who take the side of the aggressors. I understand this better now, thanks to the help of sites like www.sexualharassmentsupport.org One of the first sites that answered a lot of my questions about what I had gone through and why people had reacted the way they did, and of course in the course of the whole thing, I learned the truth which is that it's far more complicated that I ever dreamed possible.
I worked for two very large and wealthy companies, companies who have good standing in the community for the most part, but these back room dealings are beyond anything that I had ever imagined. I could never, and would never have dreamed that companies could do such things, and it's been difficult to get to the stage where I can mentally compartmentalise all that's happened over the last little while, but I am happy to try.
